Ein Streit so alt wie das Schreiben über Musik: Sagt es etwas über die Qualität einer Band aus, wenn sie einen Sound spielen, dem man sonst nicht begegnet? Ist jenseits des Marketing-Marken-Blablas ein »Alleinstellungsmerkmal« etwas, dass Künstler auszeichnet? Und ab wann ist eine Musik eigenständig? Andersum: Sind Copycats immer einfallslose Unkreative, denen noch nichtmal beim Singen unter der Dusche eine griffige Melodie einfällt?

Rewind. Natürlich ist der Genie-Gedanke abwegig, spätestens seit Beginn des Pop-Zeitalters, also roundabout seit 50 Jahren, ist das Zitat König im Rhytmen-und-Töne-Wald. Genauer: Klauen/Zitieren/Variieren/Remixen waren schon immer legitime Herangehensweisen an Musik (und Kunst im allgemeinen). Es braucht keinen Duchamp und keinen Warhol um zu erkennen, dass das Zitat grundlegender Bestandteil der Kunstproduktion ist. Puccini klaute ausgiebig bei Mozart, der wiederum bei Monteverdi. Aber leitet sich daraus zwangsläufig eine Rangfolge ab? Darf sich Monteverdi ganz oben aufs Siegertreppchen stellen, sich mit den Lorbeeren des Neuen, mit den Insignien des Originalen schmücken und Mozart wie Puccini aufs Haupt spucken?

Forward. Das Hypnotic Brass Ensemble ist eine eigenartige Band. Sie bildet sich aus den acht Söhnen von Philip Cohran, dem ehemaligen Trompeter des Sun Ra Arkestras und dem (familienfremden) Schlagzeuger Christopher Anderson. Auf Damon Albarns Label Honest Jon's, das sich auf »Weltmusik« im weitesten Sinne spezialisiert hat und neben der Moritz-von-Oswald-Produktion Wareika Hill Sounds auch den Großpapa des Afrobeats Toni Allen veröffentlicht, bringen sie nun ihr erstes, selbstbetiteltes Album heraus. Das erste Album? Nicht ganz. Seit 2004 sind schon eine ganze Reihe an Alben des Kollektivs erschienen, allerdings allesamt im Eigenvertrieb und zunächst nur käuflich bei den Auftritten der Band. Denn das Hypnotic Brass Ensemble ist vor allem dieses: Eine Live-Band. Seit Jahren treten sie als Straßenmusikanten in ihrem Heimatort Chicago und auf dem New Yorker Times Square auf und ziehen die Passanten in ihren Bann denn so will es die Bandmythologie: Bei einem Auftritt in der New Yorker Sub sei ein Zuhörer auf die Band zugekommen, der zuvor alle seine Bahnen verpasst hatte und regungslos dem Spektakel lauschte: »You guys just hypnotized me«.

PODIUMSDISKUSSION ZUR STUPA-WAHL 2009

Das Superwahljahr 2009 macht vor der Uni nicht halt: In der Woche vom 29. Juni bis zum 3. Juli sind die Studierenden der RWTH wieder aufgerufen, ihre studentischen Vertreter zu wählen. Doch wer steht überhaupt zur Wahl? Und wofür stehen die Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten?

Um das herauszufinden veranstalten die studentische Zeitung Kármán und das Hochschulradio Aachen am Mittwoch, den 24. Juni, eine Podiumsdiskussion mit den zur Wahl antretenden Listen. Beginn ist um 19.15 Uhr im Hörsaal III des Hauptgebäudes der RWTH.

Themen zur Wahl gibt es genug: Ob die jüngsten Diskussionen um das Studentenwerk, die Positionen zu Studiengebühren oder welche Aufgaben ein AStA eigentlich haben soll vor den beiden Moderatoren Alexander Vieß (Hochschulradio) und Till Spieker (Kármán) gilt es Farbe zu bekennen. Anschließend stellen sich die Listen Euch auch direkt die Gelegenheit, den Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten einmal persönlich auf den Zahn zu fühlen.

Die Debatte wird live vom Hochschulradio Aachen auf 99.1 Mhz oder per Stream übertragen, gleichzeitig ist man über Twitter.com/kamikarman auch online stets auf dem Laufenden.

Hier in Aachen siehts aus wie Weltuntergang. Dicke Wolken ziehen schnell über die Stadt, einzelne Blitze und hintergründiges Donnergrollen künden vom dystopisch Bösen. Immer wieder einsetzender Regen treibt die meisten Menschen von den Straßen. Die wenigen verbliebenen kauern sich in Hauseingänge um in den kurzen trockenen Phasen zwischen den Regenfällen umso panischer zu rennen. Ein wenig erinert das an die Filme, die den letzten Tag vor der Apokalypse zeigen: Plötzlich wird alles ganz leise, die Vögel verstummen und die Menschen verharren in regungsloser Spannung. Was für ein toller Abend um Radio zu hören!

Heute in Frisch gepresst: das britische Hip-Hop-Urgestein Ghost meldet sich mit einem neuen, überwiegend instrumentalen Album zurück, Thies Mynthner (Das Bierbeben) und Dirk von Lotzow (Tocotronic) wandeln mit ihrem Projekt Phantom/Ghost auf dem (je nach Gemütslage) schmalem Grat zwischen bitterem Totalversagen und es-trotzdem-versuchen, der Singer/Songwriter Fink veröffentlicht als Sideshow das Neo-Dub-Album des Jahres und wie aus dem Nichts kommt eine Zusammenarbeit von Burial und Four Tet über uns.
